Could the Trump-Xi Meeting Add Short-Term Support to Steel Prices?
Ahead of President Trump’s expected visit to Beijing on May 14–15, market participants may pay closer attention to whether environmental or production control measures could affect major steel-producing areas such as Hebei and Tangshan.
If temporary restrictions are introduced before or during the meeting period, even for a short time, they could reduce spot supply and provide short-term support to steel prices. Tangshan and the surrounding Hebei region remain important steel production areas in China, so any production adjustment there may quickly affect market sentiment.
At the same time, trade policy remains another key factor. With U.S. discussions around tariffs, excess capacity, and industrial supply chains continuing, steel buyers may become more cautious in timing their purchases. For buyers, this means price, delivery time, and supplier flexibility should all be watched closely in the coming weeks.
